Federal law prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, national origin, familial status, and handicap in the process of selling, buying or renting property.

How do these fair housing laws apply to you?

-
If you are a seller or landlord:
-
You cannot discriminate in the sale or rental of property, nor can you require a sales associate to convey any information that could be deemed discriminatory on your behalf.
-
You cannot prohibit buyers or tenants from seeing your property, nor can you express a preference or exclusion for certain types of buyers or tenants in any advertising.
-
You cannot treat a buyer or tenant differently in respect to the terms of the sale or rental, including financing, on the basis of the buyer's or tenant's protected class status.
-
-
If you are a buyer or tenant:
-
You will be shown housing that meets your needs without regard to your race, color, religion, sex, national origin, familial status, or handicap.
-
Your sales associate cannot "steer" you to or from a certain neighborhood based upon its racial, religious, or ethnic composition.
